Great News

Today (26th October) we received fantastic news that the patient from China continues to improve slowly day by day  with no more seizures or hallucinations. The headaches continue but are easing. She has started to eat more but her appetite is still not normal and she still feels weak.

The last 3 weeks have been very difficult and emotional for all the family. We hope that she continues to improve.

Not a simple case.

A 37 year old, fit, normally healthy, young woman who lives in South Asia, was admitted to hospital on the 1st October with a severe headache, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and a very high fever. The referring doctor performed a CT scan of the cerebrum, spinal tap, kidney and liver functions, blood tests and MRI scans. He asked for help from Swinfen Telemedicine with this very serious case.

After two days of antibiotics her headaches became worse, a stiff neck developed, she had episodes of general seizures and became sensitive to most antibiotics. It was not looking good for the patient and was moved to ICU.

Over 13 days and 85 messages through the Swinfen system, 7 medical consultants (specialising in Neurology, Neuroradiology, ENT Surgery, Internal medicine/Tropical diseases, Intensive care and Aneasthsia) all became involved in the case giving free advice on diagnoses and treatment. 2 system operatorswere also on hand, 1 in the UK and 1 in New Zealand. With the perseverance of the referring doctor the patient made a reasonable recovery and has now been moved to a hospital in Thailand for further treatment.

18 of those cases were sent from one hospital link Iraq and 5 from Micronesia (which were sent within 12 hours of setting up the link)

We also set up 3 new hospital links – 1 in Bangladesh, 1 in Iraq, and 1 in Micronesia!

New Telemedical Hospital Link

Yesterday we received a plea of help through our website from a Doctor working in a busy hospital in Micronesia, to set up a Telemedical link for them. This hospital is part of the Caroline Islands – West-Southwest of Hawaii in the North Pacific. It has 34 beds, 5 Doctors and 17 Nurses. Those patients who are unable to pay for their Treatment sign an agreement with the hospital that either they or a relative will contribute a few hours of cleaning around the hospital, help with painting work or even provide food for the hospital kitchen.

Since setting up the link the hospital has already sent 5 cases overnight which have been allocated to Swinfen Specialists.
