A new Telemedical link has been set up to Nkhoma Hospital in Malawi. This is a general hospital serving a population of 32,000 in that area, with 220 beds, nine Doctors and fifteen medical workers. The services they provide are General medicine, General surgery including prostatectomies, Maternity, Paediatrics including neonatal and nutritional rehabilitation, an eye department, HIV services and an isolation TB ward and cervical Cancer screening. X-ray and Ultrasound machines are available but no CT or MRI. Basic medicines are available.

Papua New Guinea

Port Moresby General Hospital requested a Telemedical Link which has now been set up. This is a 300 bed Teaching hospital with more than 100 Doctors, Nurses and medical staff. Specialist services available Surgery, Obstetric and Gynaecology, Radiology, Dermatology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Internal medicine and Pathology. They have a shortage of drugs but will still treat those patients that are unable to pay.

New Swinfen Telemedical Link in Uganda

Kiwoko Hospital, Luwero – Uganda, is a 250 bed community hospital built on a strong Christian foundation, with evangelism and medical help going hand in hand. They have 7 medical officers, 2 Surgeons, clinical officers and nurses. Patients contribute to the costs of their treatment, but in a rural area with much poverty this is often not possible and the ambition is that no patient should be turned away, the cost being covered by the ‘Good Samaritan Fund’.

April Statistics

This month Swinfen Telemedicine gave medical advice on cases from Iraq, Tanzania, India, Papua New Guinea, China,Nepal, Albania (Refugee Camp), Yemen, Afghanistan, Micronesia and Bangladesh.

The cases ranged from a 7 day old baby from Papua New Guinea that had been given the wrong medication to a 70 year old from Nepal with a dry cough for several years.

9 cases were Paediatric, 11 Female and 11 Male. 10 cases were sent via our unique Swinfen mobile app.
